Dr. Alex Irwin, Psychologist

she/her

I am a registered psychologist with the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario. I am experienced in providing psychological services to children, adolescents, and adults with a range of challenges, including anxiety, low mood, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, as well as difficulties with emotion regulation, interpersonal relationships, self-esteem, and identity. To help clarify mental health diagnoses and guide treatment, I provide psycho-diagnostic assessments. I enjoy working with those who experience intense emotions at the surface or under the surface, and helping you or your child to harness this strength. I feel privileged to also work with families and parents of youth and adult children who are committed to better understanding their loved ones, deepening relationships, and processing difficult experiences and emotions that all families face. In addition to psychotherapy, I offer comprehensive psycho-educational assessments for developmental and learning disabilities, gifted status, Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder, and Autism Spectrum Disorder, taking a neurodiversity-affirming approach to empower caregivers and their child with a deeper understanding of their child’s unique areas of strength and challenge.

I earned my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) and I completed my pre-doctoral residency at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) in 2021. Practicing from a trauma-informed, 2SLGBTQIA+ affirmative, and evidence-based approach, I aim to help people shift their relationship to their thoughts, connect to their emotions and those of their loved ones, and develop value-based behaviours (e.g., using cognitive behavioural therapies including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, attachment-based therapies including Emotion-Focused Family Therapy, and dialectical-behavioural orientations). I am committed to regularly participating in continuing education to provide the best care to my clients. We will work together to identify what is meaningful to you and tailor your treatment to your specific needs and goals. I bring deep empathy, genuineness, and often playfulness to sessions. I view attending therapy as an act of courage and I strive to create a safe and non-judgemental space where my clients feel seen and heard.
